BACK TO THE FUTURE
Karen Ghostlaw is an BFA honor graduate of Pratt Institute with a concentration in Photography, Printmaking and Bookbinding. Karen was a Photography Scholarship recipient and published in "Newsweek On Campus" stating her work to be somewhere “Between Painting and Photography” which has become her life long study. Under the tutelage of William Gedney, Philip Perkis, Arthur Freed, Nina Prantis and Ann Mandelbaum, Karen studied 35mm and 4x5 large format photography, black and white, color, dye transfer, and emulsion processes including gum bichromate and platinum palladium.
La pandemia globale ha portato l'umanità in un viaggio inaspettato. L'isolamento e l'auto contemplazione diventano inevitabili. Abbiamo cercato le nostre anime e vissuto con i nostri pensieri prigionieri di influenze esterne e privi di connessioni fisiche.
Questa serie di fotografie intitolata "Ritorno al futuro" sono autoritratti scattati durante la pandemia. Sono senza volto, consentendo allo spettatore di partecipare all'isolamento e all'auto contemplazione. Queste immagini stratificate costringono gli spettatori a diventare archeologi desensibilizzati, studiando gli strati storici di un mondo falso. Siamo diventati dipendenti da errori e disinformazione, possiamo guardare oltre la distrazione?
Vedo un futuro che comprende le nostre individualità e punti di forza nella nostra indipendenza, passando dall'inconscio al conscio. Questo corpo di lavoro porta lo spettatore in uno scavo visivo, come sarcofagi dissotterrati, le loro anime più sagge e illuminate che emergono. Chiedo allo spettatore di comprendere le proprie debolezze e di impegnarsi a farne i propri punti di forza, tessendo insieme gli strati del passato e del presente, per creare un nuovo futuro.
The global pandemic has brought humanity on an unexpected journey. Isolation and self contemplation became unavoidable. We have searched our souls and lived with our thoughts captive from external influences and void of physical connections.
This series of photographs Titled “Back to the Future” are self portraits taken during the pandemic. They are faceless, allowing the viewer to become a participant in isolation and self contemplation. These layered images force viewers to become desensitized archeologists, studying the storied layers of a disingenuous world. Have we become addicted to fallacies and misinformation, can we look beyond distraction?
I see a future understanding our individualities and strengths in our independence, moving from the unconscious to the conscious. This body of work takes the viewer on a visual excavation, like unearthed sarcophagi, their wiser and enlightened souls emerging. I ask the viewer to understand their weaknesses and commit to making them their strengths, weaving together the layers of the past and present, to create a new future.
